Vaudreuil-Soulanges Ecocenter: moving towards an environmentally responsible community

Monday, 22 April 2013

(Vaudreuil-Dorion, Québec) – On April 22, the MRC de Vaudreuil-Soulanges celebrated Earth Day by inaugurating the Vaudreuil-Soulanges Ecocenter. This ecocenter, located at 2800 Henry-Ford Street in Vaudreuil-Dorion, is the first permanent facility aimed at optimizing the management of residual waste and diverting it from landfills.

Mr. Robert Sauvé, Prefect of the MRC and Mayor of Coteau-du-Lac, stressed the importance of this particular infrastructure. “The Ecocenter is a significant achievement for our MRC. Setting up such an important environmental structure clearly demonstrates our ability to successfully carry out large-scale projects. This facility will help us carry out the objectives included as part of the MRC and the CMM’s residual waste management plans.”

Mr. Sauvé also emphasized the importance of having the mayors of all 23 of the MRC’s municipalities contribute to the project. “We would not have been able to achieve this without their help during the years of planning leading up to the construction of the Ecocenter.”

Ms. Géraldine T. Quesnel, President of the Regional Development and Environmental Committee and Mayor of Les Cèdres, notes that the Ecocentre truly serves as an environmental model. Not only does it ensure safe disposal of residual materials in a user-friendly environment, its strategically chosen location ensures easy access for all of the MRC’s citizens. “In addition to being in close proximity to a regional hub of commercial activity, the Ecocentre is also located at the axis of the territory’s major roads—highways 20, 30 and 40 as well as Cité-des-Jeunes and Harwood boulevards.”

The project is in keeping with the philosophy of the MRC de Vaudreuil-Soulanges which aims at ensuring environmental responsibility among its communities, and it also meets the objectives set in the Québec residual materials management policy as well as those outlined in the residual waste management plans of the MRC and the Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal (CMM).
